Is an AI Receptionist Worth It for a One-Truck Business?
The honest answer for a solo operator: when it pays for itself, when it does not, and how to work out which you are.
Most articles about answering your phone are written for companies with an office. If you are one person and a van, the maths is different — and worth doing properly before you spend anything.
Why solo operators miss the most calls
Not through carelessness. Because you are working. Hands in a panel, under a sink, on a roof, driving between jobs. There is no version of a working day where you also answer every call, and there is nobody else to catch the ones you cannot.
A shop with three people in an office misses calls at peak. A one-truck operation misses them all day, every day.
The break-even, honestly
Work with your own numbers. Say you miss three calls a week and one in three of those would have booked. That is one job a week. At a $375 average ticket, roughly $1,500 a month.
Against $40 a month for missed-call text-back, you need one saved job every twenty-two months to break even. Against $97 for the full voice receptionist, one saved job every four months. Both are low bars if the missed calls are real.
When it is not worth it
Three situations where a straight answer is no.
- You genuinely do not miss calls — you answer on the second ring most of the time.
- You are already at capacity and turning work away, so more booked jobs create a problem rather than solve one.
- Almost all your work is repeat customers who will happily leave a message.
If any of those describe you, save your money. The value here comes entirely from calls you are currently losing.
Where to start if you are unsure
Start at the bottom. The $40 plan does not answer with a voice — it texts back every call you miss, so the conversation continues instead of ending. That alone tells you how many callers were slipping away, because you will see the replies.
If the texts turn into jobs, move up to the voice plan. If they do not, you have learned something valuable for the price of two coffees a month.
